Scaffold -
Formed 1962, feat; Poet Roger McGough (b.9.11.1937) and humorist John Gorman (b.4.1.1937) joined Mike McGear (b. Michael McCartney, 7.1.1944) (younger brother of Paul McCartney), to create an act not solely reliant on pop for success. They contributed material to Gazteet, a late-night programme on ABC-Television and following an acclaimed residency at London's Establishment club, took their 'Birds, Marriages and Deaths' revue to the 1964 Edinburgh Festival, where they would return on several occasions. Although the trio enjoyed major hits with Thank U Very Much (1967) and Lily The Pink (1968) the latter of which was a massive Xmas UK No.1, these tongue-in-cheek releases contrasted the group's in-concert revues and albums. Here McGough's poetry and Gorman's comedy routines were of equal importance and their versatility was confirmed on the LPs 'The Scaffold' and 'L The P'. The schoolboy-ish Gin Gan Goolie gave the group a minor chart entry in 1969, before the unit was absorbed by Grimms, a larger, if similarly constituted, act which also featured members of the Liverpool Scene. On its demise McGear recorded 'Woman', before agreeing to resurrect Scaffold for 'Fresh Liver' on which Zoot Money (keys) and Ollie Halsall (gtr) joined from the Average White Band horn section to help bring a rock-based perspective to the trio's work. The haunting Liverpool Lou provided another UK Top 10 hit in 1974, but the founder members embarked on separate paths following the LP 'Sold Out'. McGear resumed his solo career, and became a credible photographer, while McGough returned to writing poetry. Gorman pursued a career in television, principally on the cult UK television children's show TISWAS and was back in the UK charts alongside Sally James, Chris Tarrant and Lenny Henry as the Four Bucketeers with The Bucket Of Water Song in 1980.
