The Stooges
 – Funhouse Live @ The Hammersmith Apollo
30th August 2005

(reviewed by Hot Scott)

The Stooges are playing The Hammersmith Apollo tonight to recreate their classic album Funhouse live.  This gig is all part of the Don’t Look Back series of concerts across the capital in which bands play their most celebrated works in front of their eagerly anticipating fans.  This show is arguably the best.  I mean who really gives a fuck about Belle and Sebastian and Mudhoney.  I’ve waited a long time to see Iggy Pop and what better time than now when he’s playing Funhouse with The Stooges.

Iggy comes out like a caged animal just released.  I don’t know what the fuck they do to him before – whether they lock him up and prod him with sticks but he’s so hyped up that it’s not yet halfway through ‘Down On The Street’ before he’s climbed up the stacks and started humping the amplifiers.  If you’re reading this you already know the tracklisting, but what the fuck we won’t dwell on that…

Iggy looks fucking great it has to be said.  Anyone expecting a cabbaged Ozzy type freakshow has come to the wrong place as that’s not where Iggy’s at, at all.  There’s no let-up for one second from this dude.  He’s got the energy of someone a third of his age.  The guy’s pushing 60, that’s older than most of our parents but can you honestly imagine your old man jumping on stage doing what Iggy does – it’s obscene!  Yet somehow because it’s Iggy, it’s all okay!  This guy is a contemporary of Jim Morrison & the MC5 ie he’s a LIVING FUCKING LEGEND!!!  When Funhouse was recorded the Beatles were still going.  This album was out before I was born.  And from the audience it would appear that is the same for most.  The audience’s age ranges from 18+ right through to the old heads who have come down looking for a piece of the action.  The appeal of the Stooges is phenomenal and they look like they’re having a whale of a time.  There’s a primal energy emanating from The Stooges throughout and they just drive people wild!

Funhouse is over all too quick, but it’s quite apparent that the shows not over yet.  Iggy who’s totally fired up, encores with most of their debut album.  1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog etc and when it’s time for No Fun there’s a full-scale stage invasion.  Iggy must be a roadie’s worst nightmare.  The concert itself is a total riot.  I’ve never seen anything like this before and I’ve been to thousands of gigs.  It all makes for a great show though.  The Stooges have turned the Hammersmith Apollo into a sweaty little club, I mean there’s fucking sweat dripping off the walls in here.  I believe Michael Ball is playing here in a few weeks.  How the fuck are they going to get it back to normal in time for him? In fact I wonder if anyone from this is going to go to that one.  I seriously fucking doubt it.  This is one of the best gigs I’ve been to EVER!!!  I mean it’s fucking legendary already!  But the question still remains, ‘what if I never come down…’
