There's something about naivety in most things that is appealing & rock
&
roll is no exception....... Upstep "Dirty words". A four
piece young
guitar band who seem to be of another time, having similarities to bands
like the "Only Ones" (Another girl another planet) with the singer
particularly having a bit of Peter Perret about him, they also remind of "
Squeeze" &" XTC" in their early days. More modern
comparisons would be
something like early "Ash". They deliver a gutsy set, not
always the most
together or musically proficient but who gives a fuck about that, as we all
know, some of the best stuff is knocked out by bands who can hardly play,
in fact, they get shit once they learn! Musically it did get a bit pub
rock at times, but that's a minor detail that I am sure the band will work
out of the set in time. I notice on some flyers knocking around that the
band have a healthy set of gigs coming up in South Wales over the next few
months which will help them do this. The traditional early small audience
@ Barfly enjoyed "Dirty Words". A nice change to see a
younger band
playing this style of guitar rock, no detuned nonsense.....! Second up
tonight were "El Goodo". Signed to SFA's label "Placid
Casual", with an
album out soon, along with, a support tour on SFA's September tour, things
are definitely on the up for the band! They are definitely different, at
times they reminded me of a band that could be playing at a Mexican
wedding, sometimes they sound like the Beach Boys, sometimes the Beatles.
All of this is good I suppose, or is it? Quirky would be a description of
how the band look & play. On the playing side, what the band do, they
do
well, with some interesting, western style, spaghetti guitar, along with
some good keyboard work with bits & pieces of percussion added well.
I
went away enjoying the gig, mainly due to it being interesting & different
in a strange way. Would I buy their record? Probably not at the
moment
although I look forward to having another look at them. Headliners tonight
are the "Rifles" all crombies & drainpipe jeans?
Apparently, this is
going down up in the smoke at the moment, maybe Carnaby street has
re-surfaced, last time I was there it had been knocked down! Musically
its
sort of Jam, nowhere near as sharp, like Ordinary Boys type of boring
predictable bollocks, watched 3 songs & went home!
All the best
